Preserving California's Architectural Heritage               The Hacienda Restoration

A Legacy Restored

At Chip Cooper's Roofing Co., Inc., we take immense pride in our selection for historically significant restoration projects. Our craftsmanship and attention to detail led to our enlistment by Fort Hunter Liggett and GLR Construction to participate in the restoration of one of California's most treasured historical landmarks—The "Hacienda."

A California Treasure

The Hacienda (also known as Milpitas Hacienda, Hacienda Guest Lodge, and Milpitas Ranchhouse) represents a significant piece of California's architectural and cultural heritage. Rebuilt in 1930 after a fire destroyed the original structure, this remarkable building was designed for media magnate William Randolph Hearst by Julia Morgan—the first licensed female architect in California and the creative mind behind the renowned Hearst Castle.

Architectural Significance

The Hacienda exemplifies Spanish Colonial Revival Style with its:

  • Stucco exterior
  • Grand arches
  • Expansive eaves
  • Elegant courtyards

These elements are complemented by striking Moorish Revival features, including its distinctive dome. This unique architectural blend makes the Hacienda a prime example of California's diverse architectural heritage.

Rich Historical Background

Throughout its storied history, the Hacienda has:

  • Served as quarters for 30 employees responsible for ranch operations
  • Hosted celebrities including Will Rogers and Marion Davies
  • Featured as a filming location for major motion pictures such as "Clear and Present Danger," "We Were Soldiers," and the 1966 film "Incubus"
  • Been inducted into the National Register of Historic Places in 1977

In 1940, the U.S. Army purchased the Milpitas Ranch and Ranchhouse along with surrounding properties to establish Fort Hunter Liggett, ensuring this historical treasure would be preserved for generations to come.

Our Restoration Approach

After nine months of meticulous planning and preparation, our team began the careful restoration work on this California treasure. The project required:

  • Extensive historical research to understand original construction methods
  • Sourcing of period-appropriate materials
  • Specialized techniques to maintain historical integrity
  • Compliance with strict historical preservation guidelines

Honoring History While Ensuring Longevity

Our work on the Hacienda demonstrates our commitment to preserving historical structures while implementing modern techniques that ensure their longevity. This balance of respect for historical methods and incorporation of contemporary durability is a hallmark of our historic restoration projects.

We are honored to play a role in preserving this important piece of architectural and cultural history for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.
